BTS’ attempt to give US crowds a taste of Seoul on the American Music Awards ceremony brought out an adoring audience on stage in Los Angeles.

The boy band presented America’s first live awards show in decades and crowded into a golden box with Coldplay, who sang on top.

American-Korean star will.i.am introduced the performance.

BTS are up for six awards and are the most watched music act in the world on YouTube.

The group performed at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on the back of a giant red cube with the words “Telescope” and “Transformer” written on it in Korean.

Coldplay sang their latest single A Sky Full of Stars, but the lyrics changed during the performance as the members sang each note in Korean.

Their special performance was one of many during the live broadcast of the awards show, including performances from Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Jay-Z and Kanye West.

Stars like Jennifer Lopez, J Balvin and Miley Cyrus wore vintage outfits and a smattering of feather and animal print.

Taylor Swift performed I Did Something Bad but did not appear on stage.

Co-hosts Alicia Keys and Brett Eldredge joked about the divas on stage and jokingly apologised for not making the Grammys appearance as planned.

The audience seemed to enjoy the performances and booed when Jennifer Lopez and Cardi B won their awards and began to thank the other nominees.
