The former television star talks about Meghan Markle’s outfit and gives away an engagement ring in fun appearance
Ellen DeGeneres has given away an engagement ring and asked to take Meghan Markle’s hand after the former actress gave an unexpected interview to promote her appearance on an episode of her show.
The duchess, the wife of Prince Harry, appeared on Friday’s episode of the US chat show, with the hosts and audience singing for her after a US promotional tour. DeGeneres then surprised her with an engagement ring from tennis player Serena Williams, who DeGeneres said she was presenting the ring to at an upcoming award ceremony.

“This is absolutely insane,” DeGeneres said. “You are so beautiful. I’m here to give you some advice,” she added. “It’s important that you wear bracelets. And when you wear bracelets, you make sure to wear these bracelets because this ring is very meaningful.”
DeGeneres then got on her knees and she and Markle also touched each other’s rings, while DeGeneres joked: “I’m going to cry.”
DeGeneres asked the duchess: “Do you remember when this ring was made? Is it from The Queen?” as she recalled one of the things she had liked about Harry, “…and I kind of went to the jeweler, and said ‘Who made this for him?’ and he showed me this ring. And I was like ‘No way’.
“It was with you when you were very, very young,” DeGeneres added. “Are you back in it?”
Markle shook her head no and chuckled, saying: “We just haven’t bought a ring together.”
Markle has spoken about her often unusual outfits in the past, telling the British Vogue magazine: “When I first started travelling around a lot in my early twenties, I got bored with what everyone was wearing, so I started dressing differently from the minute I got home.”
In the interview Markle also talked about visiting the US army base known as Fort Meade in Maryland in 2011, where she was given a more traditional uniform than she was accustomed to.
“I was mortified by my ‘best soldier’ outfit – although that was the one outfit I was allowed to wear that weekend,” she told Vogue. “I ended up having to wear a dunce cap, my uniform was ripped and soggy and all my glissades were hanging all over the place. My commanding officer had to rip me out of that situation. I felt so bad and after that I stopped wearing my smock. That was a complete set-back!”
Harry and Markle will celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary in November.
